The Software & Data Foundation Level 2 Apprenticeship Programme is designed to provide learners with a broad introduction to the core principles of working with software and data across a range of industries. This programme supports individuals at the start of their career, combining practical workplace experience with structured learning to build essential technical knowledge, employability skills and professional behaviours.
As a Software & Data Foundation Apprentice, individuals will support the collection, formatting, storage and validation of data, ensuring accuracy and identifying errors where necessary. They will also contribute to basic elements of software development and testing, following instructions and guidance to complete tasks effectively. These responsibilities enable apprentices to develop an understanding of how data and software underpin organisational operations across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
Throughout the programme, apprentices will gain experience working both independently and as part of a team, supporting different areas of the organisation and interacting with internal and external stakeholders. With a focus on developing confidence and capability, apprentices will build key skills such as communication, problem-solving, attention to detail and time management.
This foundation apprenticeship offers a supportive environment for learners to explore their interests, develop practical skills and gain valuable insight into the digital workplace. Completion of the programme confirms competence in the required knowledge, skills and behaviours, and provides a strong platform for progression into further training, such as a Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeship or entry into employment within the digital sector.
Assessment for the Software & Data Foundation Level 2 Apprenticeship Programme is designed to ensure that the apprentice has developed the required knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined within the standard. While this foundation apprenticeship does not follow the traditional end point assessment (EPA) model, it does include a structured final assessment stage to confirm overall competence.
Throughout the programme, progress is continuously reviewed by the employer, apprentice and training provider, with evidence gathered through practical activities, work-based tasks and off-the-job learning. This ensures the apprentice is consistently developing and applying their skills in a real work environment.
Towards the end of the programme, apprentices will complete a series of assessment activities, which may include mock tests, a project and a presentation with a professional discussion. These assessments enable the apprentice to demonstrate their knowledge, technical ability and understanding in a holistic way.
The programme concludes once all required elements have been successfully completed, including the final assessment activities and any required English and maths qualifications. This approach ensures that apprentices are fully prepared for progression into further training or employment within the digital sector.
