The Government’s Plan for Jobs (Traineeships)

In July 2020, the government announced its Plan for Jobs scheme. This scheme will launch a wave of 30,000 new Traineeships for young people and financial incentives for employers. An additional £111 million will be provided this year for Traineeships in England to fund high-quality work placements and training for 16-24-year-olds.

The government will also be expanding the eligibility for Traineeships to those with Level 3 qualifications and below. This ensures more young people have access to the high level of training they need to progress further within employment.

Protocol has 24 years of experience in delivering Traineeships, including Pre-Apprenticeships. Through these programmes, we inform employers of the potential incentives available should they take on a trainee. The benefits of a traineeship are also listed and directly linked to the relevant industry.

Traineeship Incentives

For the first time, the government will fund employers who provide trainees with work experience from the start of September 2020. This will qualify them for a £1,000 grant per trainee.

There is no direct cost to the employer or the business, however, employers are encouraged to cover the cost of the trainee’s travel if they are commuting to work on public transport.

Support for Trainees

During the six weeks to six months of employment, the trainee will receive support from Protocol for fundamental skills. This includes Maths and English, as well as assisting in the enhancement of their employability.

Support is also provided through their unpaid work experience, allowing them to gain first-hand experience within the workplace and preparing them for future employment.

After the traineeship ends

Businesses looking to progress their trainees onto an Apprenticeship will qualify for a grant of up to £2,000. There is also the possibility of an added £1,000, depending on their age.
