What Is A Traineeship?
A Traineeship is an educational training programme designed to unlock the great potential of young people and prepare them for work. They can be the perfect choice for people aged 16-18 who can not find employment. During the training programme, learners receive essential work preparation training in Maths and English. Work experience is also available to give them a better chance of securing an apprenticeship or job.
Eligibility
To apply for a Traineeship your child must be:
- Aged 16-18
- Eligible to work in England
- Unemployed with little to no work experience
- Motivated to work
What Are The Benefits?
The benefit of taking part in a Traineeship programme is that your child will have the chance to develop key employability skills. This is through on-the-job experience and the improvement of functional skills and personal qualities. Training is tailored to the learner’s needs and structured to give them the best chance at competing for an apprenticeship or job.
- On-the-job experience will offer your child the opportunity to build a CV that will grab the attention of potential employers.
- Improving functional skills like Maths and English will boost their chances of getting a job. As well as improving long-term prospects and earning potential over their lifetime.
- Developing personal qualities like confidence, self-esteem and independence will better prepare learners for the interview process as a whole.
At the end of the work placement, they will get a job interview if a role becomes available. But at the very least, they will receive a reference to help them find work elsewhere and an exit interview.
How Are Traineeships Funded?
Traineeship programmes are government-funded. The cost of training is given straight to the providers, meaning they will not cost you or your child any money.
Are Traineeships Recognised By Employers?
Yes, employers are at the heart of Traineeships, providing your child with the skills needed to secure a job and succeed. Several of the businesses we work with use Traineeships as part of their recruitment process.
How Much Do Trainees Get Paid?
A traineeship is not a job, and employers are not required to pay your child for the work placement, but they may get:
- Expenses for transport
- Support from the local Jobcentre
If you or your child are ever unsure, ask a staff member, and they will be happy to provide any further information.
What Is The Difference Between
A Traineeship And An Apprenticeship?
- A traineeship is a pre-apprenticeship programme
- Trainees are unpaid, but travel expenses are covered, as well as any PPE required for their job role
- Traineeships typically take place over six months
- Apprenticeships are more in-depth courses designed to prepare someone for full-time work
- Apprentices get paid at least the minimum apprenticeship wage
- Apprenticeships usually last for a minimum 12 months
Is A Traineeship Right For My Child?
Traineeships provide young people aged 16-18 an opportunity to improve their skills and experience. If they have been unsuccessful when applying for jobs in the past, then a Traineeship may be just what they need.
What Traineeship Opportunities Are Available?
We know it can be difficult for your child to decide what they want to do after school. It is okay if they are not sure which career path they want to go down. At PCS, we can provide Traineeship opportunities in a wide range of sectors, like Business Administration and Customer Service. Just contact a member of staff, and we will help find the placement best suited for them.
What If My Child Changes Their Mind?
Your child can choose to change their mind about a traineeship. 1-2-1 meetings will be scheduled throughout to ask your child how they are getting on with the course. If there is anything they are struggling with or if they have decided to go another way, they can let us know.
