Essentially, an apprenticeship is a full-time job with added training and assessment. This means your child would be getting on-the-job experience while earning a wage and gaining a nationally recognised qualification.
An apprenticeship will teach your child the theoretical aspect of the industry they’re working in. This is in addition to the practical experience you can only gain from working within that industry. Allowing them to implement their newfound knowledge and skills straight into the workplace.
Personal Tutors are also assigned to your child to ensure they have all the support they need to achieve their goals during the entirety of their apprenticeship.
The entry requirement for an Apprenticeship can depend on the sector or job your child is interested in. Typically, apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, currently living in England.
Recent legislation has altered the minimum Maths and English requirement for anyone with learning difficulties or disabilities. Meaning you are supported regardless by Protocol and the wide range of businesses we work with.

L2 – Intermediate – 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C
L3 – Advanced – 2 A-Level passes at grade A*-C
L4-7 – Higher – Foundation Degree & above
L6-7 – Degree – Bachelor or Masters Degree
If your child doesn’t have enough GCSEs, they can still apply for a level 2 intermediate course. Functional skills training is part of the Apprenticeship, so they will be able to achieve those qualifications in addition to everything else.
The term fully funded means that everything is paid for, so you will not be required to pay any fees. All our apprenticeship courses are fully funded by the government, allowing us to provide a professional, supportive, and friendly service without any financial risk.
There are many reasons for people to choose the University pathway. The most important is that it allows people to improve knowledge and skills within their chosen field. Moreover, it provides young people with the opportunity to develop a range of personal skills, like confidence, as they are away from home for the first time.
However, having a degree isn’t as effective as it used to be without the work experience that should accompany it. More and more people are leaving University and realising while they were getting a degree, others have been getting on-the-job experience. Making them more appealing to potential employers.
This is why apprenticeships are arguably more effective. They will provide your child with the opportunity to develop new and existing skills. Which will aid them both personally and professionally, grant them a nationally recognised qualification, and provide the work experience to match.
Currently, the minimum wage for an apprentice is £4.15 an hour, as set by the Government, and increases yearly. The minimum wage only applies if you are under 19 or in the first year of an Apprenticeship. This means that once the first year has finished, learners are paid the minimum wage for their age group, and if they choose to do another apprenticeship, they won’t be required to return to the Apprenticeship wage.
Of course. Even if your child is an apprentice, they are entitled to the same conditions as other employees within the business. This being that holiday is accrued over time and typically resets in January. Apprentices are also entitled to sick pay and any other benefits the employer offers to the rest of their workforce, although this varies from business to business.
Typically, a full-time apprentice will work between 30 to 40 hours a week depending on the requirements of their role within a business. Government regulations are currently in effect to protect young workers from overworking. Which also applies to apprentices. These include:
Our dedicated staff have many years of experience in their respective fields and have achieved all the qualifications they teach and assess. Our fully qualified educators will deliver high-quality face-to-face training to improve job-specific skills and tailored to a specific business’s needs.
Through on and off-site training provided by PCS and the chosen business, learners work to develop the specific skills needed for success. This includes functional skills in Maths, English, and I.T. On-site resources will also be available to assist learners during their apprenticeship course. Online resources are also provided through Moodle & Mahara to help bring the subject to life.
Your child can choose to change their mind about an apprenticeship. 1-2-1 meetings will be scheduled throughout to ask your child how they are getting on with the course. If there is anything they are struggling with or if they have decided to go another way, they can let us know. Your child will be expected to work their notice period, just like any other job, and would then be able to go on to study or seek employment elsewhere, with support provided by us every step of the way.
At Protocol, we stress the importance of safeguarding, and all of our staff adhere to the Safeguarding Policies. If your child has any problems at work, they can speak to us at any time, and we will step in. The needs of our learners are of utmost priority so support will be available throughout the entirety of their Apprenticeship or Traineeship.
If your child has performed well throughout the Apprenticeship, the vast majority of employers will indeed keep them on as a full-time employee. Around 90% of Apprentices stay with their current employer once their course has finished, but it is not guaranteed.
