Between 2021 and 2023, I attended college where I studied three A-levels: Chemistry, Biology and Physics — quite a contrast to the qualification I have completed. During my time there, I realised that traditional classroom learning was no longer the most effective approach for me. After reflecting on my learning preferences, I discovered that I thrived in more practical, hands-on environments. This led me to explore apprenticeship opportunities as a better fit for my career development, which is when I came across Protocol’s programmes.
I chose to pursue an apprenticeship with Protocol because it offered a more practical, hands-on approach to learning. I’d always been interested in the business sector — particularly marketing and sales — and Protocol’s Multi-Channel Marketer apprenticeship aligned perfectly with those interests. The programme covered key marketing concepts, giving me the knowledge I needed and the opportunity to apply it directly to my own campaigns and projects.
This career path also appealed to me because it allowed me to avoid university debt while still providing clear progression routes into higher-level apprenticeship programmes in the future.
The apprenticeship has supported my growth both personally and professionally. Personally, it allowed me to adjust to a full-time working lifestyle which was a big step as this was my first official employment. Through this experience I developed key personal skills such as teamwork, communication, trust and dedication — all of which have helped me become more confident and adaptable in a professional setting.
Professionally, the apprenticeship enabled me to gain valuable experience working within an office environment, giving me insight into workplace expectations and professional standards. My marketing and IT skills have also improved significantly as I was able to apply what I learned directly to real projects, campaigns and technical errors. This hands-on experience has strengthened my confidence in my abilities and prepared me for future progression in my career.
The biggest challenge I have faced since starting my apprenticeship has been finding the right balance between work and life alongside managing the different elements of my role in both marketing and IT. Learning to juggle these responsibilities effectively has taken time and commitment.
However, I’ve come to appreciate these challenges because they push me to grow. I enjoy being in situations that test my abilities as they allow me to develop professionally and become more confident in handling complex tasks. Each challenge has ultimately strengthened my skills and improved the way I manage my workload.
