Briefly state your journey prior to starting your apprenticeship at Protocol?

Before securing my apprenticeship at AK Centre I was struggling to find the right opportunity to kickstart my career. I had been applying for apprenticeships but wasn’t getting any responses which left me feeling uncertain about my next steps. That’s when I came across Protocol’s pre-apprenticeship programme. After visiting Protocol and speaking to their team I realised this was the perfect way to develop my skills, build my confidence and gain real work experience. Over six months I completed structured learning, developed essential employability skills and secured a work placement at AK Centre. This placement not only gave me hands-on experience but also helped me understand the professional environment and expectations within a business setting.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose the apprenticeship route because I wanted to enter the working world while still learning and gaining qualifications at the same time. University wasn’t the right fit for me—I wanted a more hands-on approach to developing my skills and career. The pre-apprenticeship at Protocol gave me the foundation I needed and when AK Centre offered me an apprenticeship as a progression opportunity it felt like the natural next step. It allowed me to continue my development, earn a wage and gain real-world experience all while working towards a recognised qualification.

How has the apprenticeship programme helped you personally and professionally?

The Business Administration Level 3 apprenticeship has been an incredible learning experience. Professionally it has taught me valuable skills such as time management, organisation and communication all of which are essential in an office environment. I’ve also learned how to interact with the public, handle administrative tasks efficiently and contribute to the day-to-day operations of the company.

On a personal level my confidence has grown significantly. When I first started I was hesitant when speaking to people especially in a professional setting. But through continuous support from both Protocol and AK Centre I’ve developed stronger communication skills and can now engage with colleagues, customers and residents with ease. The programme has shaped me into a more confident and capable individual ready to take on new challenges.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced since you started your apprenticeship?

One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was answering incoming phone calls. Speaking to residents over the phone made me nervous as I lacked confidence in my communication skills. At first I worried about saying the wrong thing or not being able to assist people effectively. However with training and guidance from both Protocol and my team at AK Centre I learned how to handle calls professionally. Through practice and encouragement I became more comfortable speaking with residents over the phone and even in person while working at reception. Over time I’ve turned this initial challenge into a strength and I now feel much more at ease in professional conversations.
