Briefly state your journey prior to starting your apprenticeship at Protocol?

Before joining Protocol, I was 16 years old and had finished school. I attended army school which was based in Wolverhampton as I was preparing to carry out Basic Training as a Solider in HGV Driving. However, It wasn’t for me as I didn’t enjoy it. I then came across this apprenticeship which was more ideal for me and my lifestyle.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain real work experience while working towards a qualification. I felt that classroom-only learning wasn’t right for me and I preferred the idea of developing practical skills in a professional environment. An apprenticeship also gave me the opportunity to earn money while I learned, which was important to me as it allowed me to support myself and gain independence. Overall, it felt like the best route to build both my career and personal development.

How has the apprenticeship programme helped you personnaly and professionally?

The apprenticeship programme has helped me personally by building my confidence, independence and communication skills. Working in a professional environment taught me how to manage responsibilities, organise my workload and work effectively as part of a team. Professionally, it has given me valuable hands-on experience, practical knowledge and a recognised qualification that I can use to progress in my career. It has also helped me understand the industry better and develop skills that will stay with me long term.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced since you started your apprenticeship?

The biggest challenge I faced during my apprenticeship was adapting to a professional working environment after coming straight out of school. At first, it was a big adjustment learning how to communicate with clients, manage my time effectively and take on real responsibilities. However, over time I gained confidence, developed stronger organisational skills and learned how to handle tasks independently. This challenge pushed me to grow both personally and professionally and I now feel much more prepared for future career opportunities.
